PRE-PLANNED ITINERARIES

 

A THREE-DAY TRIP OF NORTHWESTERN HUNGARY

Day 1 We leave Budapest in the morning and drive to the town of Gyor. A short walk in the city center. Continue to Fertod to see the palace (the "Hungarian Versailles", a guided tour). Drive on to Sopron, a medieval Hungarian town. Walk in the city center. Visit museums and the Fire Tower. Dinner on your own. Overnight near Sopron in the Guest House of the Hungarian Lutheran Church.


Fertod

Day 2 In the morning we will drive to the town of Koszeg, the "Jewelry Box of Hungary". If time allows, we will visit the medieval church of Jak. Drive across NW Hungary towards Lake Balaton. Stop at Sumeg castle. Drive on to Badacsony at the lake. Dinner on your own. We will spend the night in a guest house situated in a vineyard on the slope of Badacsony Hill.


Koszeg

Day 3 We will see the unique rock formations of volcanic hills and vineyards at the lake, visit the Tihany Peninsula, its Abbey Church and other monuments. We will drive along the northern shore of the lake and arrive back in Budapest in the evening.

A NINE-DAY TRIP OF WESTERN HUNGARY

Day 1 Arrive in Budapest. Meet your guide at the airport and transfer to your hotel. Take an orientation walk in the afternoon. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Budapest.

Day 2 Half day sightseeing in Budapest. Afternoon free for shopping. Dinner. Overnight in Budapest.

Day 3 Full day trip of the Danube Bend with lunch en route. Afternoon free in Budapest. Dinner. Evening classical concert or folk dance performance.

Day 4 Drive to Southern Hungary. Sightseeing, dinner and overnight in Pecs.

Day 5 Pecs is one of the most attractive of Hungary's towns, a place with a Mediterranean touch, a lot of Roman, early Christian and Ottoman Turkish monuments. It is also a town of artists, art galleries and antique shops. We spend a full day here. Overnight in Pecs.

Day 6 We spend a day in the town of Siklos to see its medieval castle and in the Villany Hills further to the south. This is a wine country: we will visit several wineries and wine cellars in the Villany Hills and stay in the guesthouse of one of the best-known Hungarian wintners.

Day 7 On this day we drive to the northwest to see the Castle of Szigetvar, which played an important role during the Ottoman Turkish wars: Suleiman the Magnificent died there. We will drive on and reach Lake Balaton and spend a night at a family hotel at the foot of Badacsony Hill.

Day 8 We continue northwest and visit the castles of Sumeg and Sarvar. We spend the night in the town of Koszeg (the "Jewelry Box of Hungary") near the Austrian border.

Day 9 On to Sopron on the Austrian border, another town with a historic touch. We will visit the Palace of Fertod (the "Hungarian Versailles"). The Hungarian part of the trip ends here. We can drive you back to Budapest, or on to Vienna, or you can continue the trip to Bratislava and Prague.

AN EIGHT-DAY "GRAND TOUR OF HUNGARY"

Day 1 Arrive in Budapest. Meet your guide at the airport and transfer to your hotel. Take an orientation walk in the afternoon. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Budapest.

Day 2 Half day sightseeing in Budapest. Afternoon free for shopping. Dinner. Overnight in Budapest.

Day 4 Drive to Western Hungary, to Lake Balaton. En route visit the ruins of the Roman settlement of Gorsium. See the town of Tihany, located on a peninsula in Lake Balaton, probably the most beautiful landscape in Hungary. We will drive along the shore of Lake Balaton. Wine-tasting on Badacsony Hill. Dinner. Overnight at a family hotel at the foot of Badacsony Hill.

Day 5 Drive on to the Sarkoz ("Marshlands") area on the Danube River. Visit a traditional village to see its craftspeople and the village museum. Dinner and overnight in Szekszard.

Day 6 On this day we cross the Danube River by a funny ferry-boat and find ourselves on the eastern side of the river, on the Great Hungarian Plain. We will visit the town of Kalocsa with its Roman Catholic Cathedral and its unique paprika museum. Drive on to Kecskemet. Dinner and overnight at Kecskemet.

Day 7 We will see Kecskemet, a typical Art Nouveau style town on the Great Plain. See the magnificent Town Hall and the Museum of Primitive Artists. Drive on to Eger, an 18th century Baroque town in northeastern Hungary. Dinner and overnight in Eger.

Day 8 Sightseeing in Eger to see the castle and the valley of wine-cellars. Wine-tasting. The trip ends at Eger. We can drive you back to Budapest, or you can continue traveling towards Slovakia and the Czech Republic or to Romania.

A THREE-DAY TRIP OF CENTRAL HUNGARY or "THE ESSENCE OF THE HUNGARIAN COUNTRYSIDE IN THREE DAYS"?

Day 1 We will leave Budapest in the morning and drive to the northwest to the village of Holloko (a UNESCO World Heritage site). Our hostess will be waiting for us and lead us along the main street of the village. We will see the old church, small arts galleries and craftsmen's workshops. We will have traditional village food for lunch in the house of our hostess. In the afternoon we drive across the Matra Hills and enjoy the view from the top of Hungary's highest peak (ca. 2,000 ft). Drive on to Eger, the most beautiful Hungarian Baroque town, and a center of the wine country. Walk around in the valley of wine cellars and time to dinner on your own. Overnight at Eger.

Day 2 Sight-seeing in Eger including the Castle of Eger. Drive to the nearby town of Mezokovesd, famous for its folk arts. Visit the old town center to see the restored old houses and visit crafts people (embroiderers, weavers, painters, etc.). Drive across the Hungarian Great Plain to Kecskemet, a typical Hungarian town of the area, famous for its Art Nouveau style architecture. We go for a walk in the city center. Dinner on your own, overnight in Kecskemet.

Day 3 Sightseeing in Kecskemet including the Art Nouveau-stlye Town Hall and the Museum of Hungarian Folk Arts and Crafts and the museum of Primitive Artists. Drive to a ranch on the Great Plain to see a horse show. You will see long-horn gray cattle, horses, sheep and many other animals typical of the Great Plain. We will have lunch in a traditional Country inn. Arrive back to Budapest in the afternoon.
